Digging Gardens

Most people would be happy to move into a house with a garden already perfect. But me? Ever since I started gardening (about a dozen years ago), I've been drawn to places where things aren't currently growing. My first garden was carved out of a weedy backyard that had served as the neighborhood construction dump site. I figured that I couldn't make it worse!

When Marshal & I moved into our home (this is our 7th summer), there was one standard garden with daylillies, and then there was one garden & a hillside with "wildflowers" (golden rod, a.k.a. weeds). We now have 7 gardens, dug out of the lawn (or weeds, or rocks). We rarely plant large plants... we usually get small perennials (plants that come up year after year) when the sales start. We plant lots... and wait to see what survives. We're still digging up weeds, planting new plants, laying paths, spreading mulch. But you know what? It's finally beginning to look like the garden we'd hoped it would be. And we love it.

So now I find myself digging up new "ground" for a church. Not going where someone else has already gone. Going to people who are new to God, new to faith. Probably shouldn't be surprised!

We're 7 years in on the garden, and we're 2 1/2 years in on the church. My prayer is that when we arrive at 7 years with the church it will be flourishing as much as our garden is now!

When we bought our house, we bought it based strictly on the yard, not the house. My husband said, "The house is kind of ugly," and I said, "But look at that yard!" It had no garden at all. But now it flourishes (as do the weeds), so I know just what you mean. It's a different sort of challenge and feeling. Praying for your other plantings!
