I'm preparing to teach at the local college again... this time "Fundamentals of English." As I've been reviewing the "parts of speech" I've been amazed HOW I've remembered them. Does anyone else remember "School House Rock" -- the little 3 minute grammar and history lessons that were part of the Saturday morning cartoon lineup in the '70s? "Conjunction Junction, what's your function? Hooking up words and phrases and clauses" the cartoons sang. And those songs got in my head! And now, through the magic of youtube, I've found those short cartoons and am going to use them with my college students. Hey, if I (with a degree in English) remember parts of speech through little songs and cartoons, why can't these students?
Hmmm... maybe the next time I preach I should do it in three minutes song segments with cartoons....
