Ancient Egypt

I continue - slowly! - working on my new novel.  It's more research than I anticipated.  Why?  Because as I began to write about one of these women mentioned briefly (one sentence) in the Old Testament, it dawned on me that I had to start the story LONG before she ends up serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting (that one, tantalizing sentence).  And since this verse in Exodus that is causing me to write is early on in "The Exodus" of the Israelites, then the place that I have to start is Egypt.  Ancient Egypt.  And how much do I know about Ancient Egypt?

Well... today I know a whole lot more than I knew two weeks ago!  But it feels like I have to read pages of material before writing a paragraph.  The chances of writing 50,000 words by the end of November is looking grim.  Still... it's pretty interesting stuff.

And while it may seem that Ancient Egypt would really have no bearing on today,  I'm finding that's not the case.  I'm discovering that by learning about Ancient Egypt, I'm learning about how God works within a culture.  So much of what He did in Exodus seems so... foreign to us.  But my new discovery?  It wouldn't have seemed foreign at all to people growing up in Egypt.

Makes me appreciate how He is a God who wants to reach us where we are... whether that's Ancient Egypt, or the good old U.S.A.
