This week I received a check for an article that I had written (for Light and Life magazine... no, I don't know when they're going to publish it). I thought when I got the check I'd be excited... maybe frame the check stub?
When the check came, I actually didn't know what it was for (it came from the denomination, not the magazine). When I finally figured it out, I didn't jump up and down with excitement, or rush off to buy a frame. Instead, I stared at the check on my desk thinking about how ODD it is to get money for putting words to paper.
Words have power to heal or hurt, challenge or stifle. The Bible even refers to Jesus as "The Word made flesh." Using those powerful words is a challenge, a gift, and a responsibility. But getting paid for using words? Odd. (But I'll happily cash the check!... And maybe I'll get used to this idea...)
