Taxes and Charities

I'm not a political blogger. I rarely make political comments. But this time, I need to say something!
The President has recently recommended that for "the wealthy" there be no tax advantage to giving to charity. In other words, giving would no longer be a tax deduction. The President's rationale is that this money is needed by the government for health care.
Last week we (the Loop) went and volunteered at Feed My Starving Children. It's a wonderful organization that packages meals (rice, soy, and vitamin mix) to go all over the world. The mix can literally take a child from starvation to health in 90 days. The organization is highly effective... 94% of donations goes to food production. They use lots and lots and lots of volunteers. One meal costs 17 cents.
If the tax advantage goes away, how much will FMSC lose? How many meals will no longer be produced? And then... how much will fall back on the government? And how much will it cost the Federal Government to produce a meal? Certainly not 17 cents. $2? $5? $10?
During this time of hardship in our country, our government needs to be giving people incentives to give to organizations that are helping the poor...not taking those incentives that we have away.
