In the book of Mark, chapter 2, there's a story that I've been thinking about the past couple of days. The story takes place in Capernaum, the town where Jesus launches His public ministry... He teaches in the synagogue, He calls His first disciples, He exorcises a demon, He heals many people. But one guy in town hasn't yet gotten close to Jesus because he's paralyzed. This paralyzed guy had some crazy friends who decide that they will do what it takes to get their friend in to see Jesus... no matter how many crowds they have to fight.
These friends together lift the bed of their paralyzed friend, and off they go. But when they get to the home where Jesus is teaching, they can't get in. It's packed, and people won't let them by. Rather than give up, they climb up the stairs to the roof, and they dig a hole in the roof so that they can lower the bed of their friend through the hole!
I picture Jesus teaching below. And then the noise starts above. And then the dust starts to fall. I picture this group as young (can't you hear the group below yelling "crazy kids!")... and I picture them laughing the whole time (as they imagine the looks of their elders below).
Jesus - for his part - seems to enjoy this. In fact, we're told that because of the faith of this group (not just the faith of one), Jesus forgives this man's sins AND heals him!
I know people go away from that place amazed at the healing power of Jesus' that day. But I also know that some go away unhappy... the Pharisees are unhappy because Jesus claims that He can forgive sins (functionally claiming to be God)... and I'm guessing the homeowner isn't too happy about the hole in his roof.
This all made me ask the question... what "crazy" thing am I willing to do, in order to bring a friend to Jesus? Am I willing to think outside the box (maybe even dig a whole in the box)? Am I willing to make a few "religious" or "conventional" people mad?
After thinking about it for awhile, I did something a little crazy... because of a friend that I really want to bring to Jesus. Ask me about my crazy behavior sometime. In the meantime, let me ask: What crazy thing could you do today to bring a friend to Jesus?
